Texting from GoHighLevel means every message and reply is saved on the contact’s record, and your team can see the whole thread. Before your first text there is one piece of setup to know about, so we cover that first.

One-time setup you should know about: to send texts, your account needs its own phone number (a few dollars a month) and, in the US, a carrier registration called A2P approval, which can take a few days. You add the number under Settings → Phone Numbers. If a client gave you this account, this is probably already done.

The steps

  1. Open Conversations

Click Conversations in the left sidebar. You see a list of message threads (empty is normal on a new account).

  2. Start a new message

Look at the top of the thread list for a compose icon — a small square with a pencil. Click it.

  3. Pick the person

Start typing a contact’s name and select them from the dropdown. Add yourself first if you want a safe test — your own number from the first-contact tutorial works perfectly.

  4. Make sure the message type says SMS

Above the typing box there is a small tab or dropdown for the channel — SMS, Email, and so on. Make sure SMS is selected.

  5. Type something short and human

For a test: “Hi, it’s me testing my new system — reply YES if this reaches you.” Keep real messages under 160 characters when you can; long texts get split.

  6. Press Send and watch the thread

Click the Send button (bottom-right of the typing box). The message appears in the thread. When the person replies, the reply lands in this same thread and nowhere else you need to check.

Success check: your test text arrives on the phone within a minute, and the reply shows up inside the same Conversations thread.

Common questions

“My text never arrived. What do I check?” Three usual suspects: the account has no phone number yet (Settings → Phone Numbers), A2P registration is still pending, or the contact’s number is missing its country code. Our Troubleshooting section walks through all of them.

“Can I text from my existing business number?” Often yes — numbers can usually be ported or connected, but it is a support process, not a checkbox. Plan on using a new number the first week.

“Is there a cost per text?” Yes, a fraction of a cent per message in most regions, billed from a small credit balance in the account. A hundred test texts costs pennies.
