You run an HVAC, plumbing, roofing or electrical company. Two years ago a marketing company set you up with “the system”: a number that texts back when you miss a call, a review request after every job, a follow-up sequence for the estimates that stall. It works, and you pay for it every month. What nobody told you is the name of the software underneath, or what it costs on its own.
This guide shows you what is inside your account, what it costs to own, what moves cleanly, and the order that keeps your phones ringing through the switch. You also get the honest case for keeping your agency.
What is inside your GoHighLevel account, and why it matters
Strip the branding away and your home-services sub-account holds five things that make you money. The missed-call text-back that answers a ringing phone you did not reach. The estimate follow-up that pings a homeowner when your quote sits unopened. The review request tied to your Google Business Profile that fires after a completed job. And the seasonal campaigns and the booking calendar.
Every one of those is a HighLevel feature with a help-center article behind it, from the missed-call text-back workflow to review automation and bulk campaign enrollment. Your agency configured them and did not invent them, which is why you get to ask what the software costs by itself.
The single most valuable asset in your account is the phone number. It is on your trucks, your yard signs and your Google listing. Everything else is configuration.
What does GoHighLevel for contractors cost when you own it?
HighLevel publishes its prices, and I checked them on August 31, 2026. The Starter plan is $97 a month or $970 a year, and it gives you up to three sub-accounts, unlimited contacts and unlimited users with the full CRM, pipeline management, calendars, workflow automation, email marketing and SMS marketing built in. Unlimited at $297 and Agency Pro at $497 are for companies that resell the platform, and you need neither.
Usage sits on top of your subscription, and it is small. A local number rents for $1.15 a month, text messages run $0.00747 per segment before carrier fees, and outbound calls cost about $0.0166 per minute. A single-location contractor sending 2,000 text segments and talking for 1,000 minutes a month lands around $39 to $51 in telecom usage at the rates HighLevel publishes. That is a modeled estimate, not a benchmark, and your volume sets your bill.
Add it up and your owned account with ordinary usage costs about $1,500 a year. Published rate cards from contractor marketing specialists tell a different story: one lists HVAC SEO at $1,500 to $2,300 per location per month, and another lists SEO at $2,800 a month with ad management from $2,000. What exports cleanly, and what has to be rebuilt?
You have three ways to move, and they are not equal. A contact export gives you a spreadsheet: names, emails, phone numbers, tags and custom-field values. HighLevel’s export guide says it leaves behind your automation history, and by its nature a contact file carries none of your workflows, funnels or calendars. It is a backup, not a migration, and you take it on day one anyway.
A snapshot, which only your agency creates, copies the configuration: workflows, funnels, calendars, forms, pipelines, custom fields, tags and templates. It leaves behind your contacts, appointments, conversations, Stripe connection and third-party integrations. It is the second-best path and it depends on your agency’s cooperation.
The best path is an intact sub-account transfer. HighLevel’s transfer guide says the releasing agency’s owner or an authorized admin must initiate it, the receiving side approves it, and HighLevel does not support partial transfers. Your websites, funnels, calendars, automations, contacts, conversations, opportunities and history all come across together. Two catches: transferred automations arrive in Draft, and you reconnect your external calendar, Google, Facebook, Stripe and email-sending connections by hand. “It transferred” is not “it is live.”
The migration order that keeps your phones ringing
Do these in sequence and you keep any interruption to a planned window you chose.
- Inventory everything: numbers, domains, the Google Business Profile connection, ad accounts, forms, calendars, workflows, and who holds the login for each.
- Export your contacts as a backup the same day.
- Open the receiving account in your own name and on your own card.
- Decide the phone path: HighLevel’s built-in LC Phone or your own Twilio. Both sides on LC Phone is the smoother transfer.
- Move the number and its texting registration, then confirm both are live before anything else.
- Transfer the intact sub-account, or load the agreed snapshot, then reconnect domains, calendars, Google and email sending.
- Test calls, texts, forms, booking links and review links end to end, with a real phone in your hand.
- Publish workflows one at a time and watch the first run of each.
- Cancel the old service last, after everything above has passed.
HighLevel’s own eject documentation says automations arrive in Draft, so step eight is not optional, and its phone migration guide exists because step five is the one that costs owners their texting. Keep the old arrangement alive until you have personally sent and received a text from the new one.
The trap: your phone number and your A2P registration are two different moves
Federal rules protect the account holder’s right to keep a number. The FCC’s number portability order says a losing carrier cannot refuse a valid port because of an unpaid balance, and a later FCC order requires simple ports to complete within one business day of a complete request. The right belongs to whoever holds the account, so check whose name your number sits under.
Texting is not. Business texting in the United States runs on A2P 10DLC registration, and Twilio’s documentation is explicit that the registered Brand must be the actual business sending the messages. If your agency registered the campaign under its own brand, that registration does not follow your number. Moving the number alone leaves you with a line that rings and does not text. Twilio says manual campaign reviews take 10 to 15 days, and HighLevel’s own phone-move guide warns that A2P approvals do not always follow a moved number, so you confirm the attachment after the move.
Now stack the timelines. A clean port completes in about a business day, but when the account holder, address or PIN on the request does not match the carrier’s records, the carrier rejects it and the clock starts over. A campaign review takes 10 to 15 days, and a rejected campaign starts that clock again. Cancel your agency on the first of the month and you lose missed-call texting for most of it, while CallRail’s benchmark data says as many as 85 percent of callers who do not get through never call back.
In June 2026 a Las Vegas law firm that Spectral Vision works with discovered its call-tracking numbers had been dead for weeks. Nobody noticed, because the calls simply stopped. Register your A2P campaign under your own business, in your own account, before the old one closes. It is the one step I will not let a client skip.
When keeping your agency is the right call
Sometimes the retainer is the best hire you have. Google’s own Local Services Ads guidance says regularly missed calls and unanswered messages may hurt your ranking, and managing LSA well is ongoing work. An agency that does that work, runs your ads, keeps your reviews answered and maintains your workflows is selling labor, and labor is worth paying for.
